Any time management plan is just as good as the goals or objectives it comprises of. Therefore, objectives represent some of the main factors that influence the actual management. From this point of view, it is highly recommended to decide on some goals upfront. It is said that if you have no clue where you want to reach to, you do not need any directions. Just go randomly and you will eventually reach somewhere. My general advice is to have very specific goals. A lot of people have general objectives that are not too precise. They simply come up with some random expectations, without bothering to dig some more.
SMART is a very smartly selected acronym for what you have to take in consideration when setting some goals.

So what are these characteristics trying to tell you? A good example can help you understand everything. For example, I often teach people about how to organize an official presentation in small details. Deciding on a goal is piece of cake in this case. I just have to help people realize what steps they have to follow for better presentations. However, this is a general objective that does not help me too much.
A specific goal must target my seminar participants. I am supposed to build my presentation with some general ideas in mind. I have to draw some attention and convince my audience that my work is adequate for their needs. My presentation must also support the message that I try to transmit, not to mention about helping the students reach their goals.
How do you know if you have reached your objectives? How can you tell if your mission has been accomplished? In my case, I can just pay attention to the upcoming presentations. I have to inspect the group and ensure that my audience has remarked the change. The change should occur by the end of the initial course too, although it is less obvious.
Are your goals realisable? The answer depends on the standards I have set before starting my presentation. If people lack any experience and the presentational standards are relatively low, the answer is negative. On the other hand, if your audience consists of trained people with a little experience in this domain, your goals should be feasible.
If the time you allocate for your job is inadequate, your goals may not be too realistic. In my example, my students’ capacity to come up with a good presentation is theoretically improved, but obviously not in just one class.
When it comes to a professional development course, its duration must be time scheduled. The course can be scheduled a month later, so the objectives cannot be attained before that time. It is, however, very important to focus on a decent duration. After all, two or three days are not always enough for tough objectives.
Such an approach is very likely to to provide the required help for some clear objectives. Clear goals are very important, while the lack of precision can affect any factor in an individual’s job and responsibilities.
How to set your goals in time management
A decent part of your tasks in correct time management are tightly connected to managing conflicts and making smart decisions regarding your priorities. All these things cannot be handled if you do not have the base of some clearly set goals.
A detailed analysis of setting correct goals may take a lot of time. But then, you do have to know that this is a crucial aspect for every organization. Every business functions by the book if its goals are concise. The managerial structure works a lot better if every manager know what to do and every worker is aware of their tasks and responsibilities. Think about your own position. Are there any unclear aspects? Can they cause any conflicts?
A simple example is more than enough to help you out. There are several reasons wherefore a manager is asked to revise a random system.
- Improving its accuracy
- Accelerating its operations
- Saving money
However, revising this system is quite difficult if something is not clear. In this case, the manager wastes time in the attempt to verify or determine some goals. In other situations, the work is handled with general and inadequate purposes in mind. In both scenarios, the result is obvious – time waste. Unless you have a clear image about your tasks, inform yourself, verify and clarify everything. This way, time management will become a lot simpler.
